SID from Subt Lemon at giginthepark August 2003

8th-10th August 2003 Halesworth, Suffolk

After the last fiascotic journey to the Willow festival, arrangements were made well in advance to avoid any logistical hitches. Fortunately, after SID somehow forgot to turn up to hire the van on the Friday after reassurances that ‘of course he’d be there’, Dave stepped in and did the honours. Subt Lemon arrived well on time, relaxed and in high spirits.

Upon arrival, it was discovered that the stage was a magnificent affair with it’s very own inflatable B52 bomber careering from the canopy, flanked by two fully inflated naked gorillas save for their loin clothage. Picture a stage for a festival one would expect in Amsterdam and you’d not be far wrong.

As 2nd Support for Dr. Feelgood http://www.drfeelgood.de on stage at 8pm, the light was just beginning to fade after a roasting hot day. Subt Lemon entered the stage to a soundscape backing track created by Graeme Webb as part of the ‘Too Close for Comfort’ DVD and once again performed an intense and at times blistering set of 40 minutes. The crowd of all ages were literally scorched and it was all thanks to the skill of the St. Johns Ambulance folk that there weren’t any casualties requiring airlifting to the local hospital. Local being 50 miles away. This was a true countryside festival.

And that was partially the beauty of the event. The lack of concerns for image, the courteous attitudes of all the staff and the crowds made this a fantastic and memorable event. None of the typical London nonchalance or attitude, just good old fashioned fun.

Sunday found Subt Lemon once  again on the main stage at around 3pm doing an acoustic set of about 30 minutes to an ambling, appreciative crowd and to cap things off nicely, SID won the skateboard in the ‘maintain our skate park’ raffle run by blackandwhite skateboard shop http://www.bandwskate.com. OK, so it was just the board and it doesn’t have wheels or trucks, but it looks lovely. Lovely.
